  1. He is given fifty heads in Hesiod, Theogony 311, and Roman poets give him a hundred (Horace, Carmina ii. 13. 34; Seneca Hercules furiosus 784. The Byzantine John Tzetzes, Ad Lycophron 678, also gives him a hundred heads. Both numbers are conventions for "many".
